Beauty and the Beast Smutty Mafia Romance Retellings

Who knew that Beauty and the Beast would meet smutty mafia romances and become a thing?

But of course it is!

I picked up a Beauty and the Beast-themed mafia romance the other weekend on a whim.  Mafia romances are not a genre I typically enjoy, especially not the dark variety.  Yet on a lark, I read Beautiful Beast (Perfectly Imperfect: Mafia Legacy #1) by Neva Altaj about a hacker and her scarred, obsessed mobster boss who hides her clothes so she'll wear his.  (Ummhmm... Aren't weekends perfect for a fast, fun read?)

It was indeed fun, fast-paced and cute, so I read the second in the series:  Broken Whispers  (Perfectly Imperfect #2) by the same author about an arranged marriage between a mute ballerina and her scarred husband.  And you can guess what happened next - I read another one.

The Mafia Romance Trope

So then I got curious as to when mafia romances became a trope.  It's not a theme I remember selling much of working at a bookstore in college in the nineteen hundreds.

So let's think… while you can't count The Godfather and Goodfellas as romance plots, they were definitely alluring, romanticizing the mobster lifestyle.  Per this list on Goodreads it looks like mafia romances popped up here and there in 2014 & 2015, gaining steam in the next few years and then firing up in the 2020s.

Mafia romances walk a line of violence and dark themes.  They are often morally ambiguous, featuring dark, fierce, broody mobsters with equally fierce and broody hearts.  Themes center on power, control, loyalty and redemption.  I like how this commentary from SeaCrow Books expresses what keeps mafia romance interesting:  "Mafia Romance expertly balances raw, unfiltered passion with moments of tender vulnerability, creating a tension that keeps readers glued to the page."  Yep, that's true.

I'll add that most mafia romances aren't for the faint of heart.  They are not delicate romances - I've found most to be raw, smutty and dark.  I would rate the spicy level of the few I've read to be high - not quite erotica, but close.

I discovered a delightful podcast focused on romance books of all genres called Fated Mates while researching mafia romances.  In this episode they discuss the rise of the mafia romance novel trope.  It's worth a listen.

Beauty & the Beast Smutty Mafia Style

What I find fun about applying Beauty and the Beast outside the usual tropes is that authors can stay true to the lore of the fairytale, spinning new flavors of the core plot and fairytale moral.  After all, beauty is perspective and women hold the power over monsters.

I hope you'll explore these three Beauty and the Beast-themed Mafia Romances.  They were fun.

πŸ’•  Beautiful Beast: An Age Gap Forced Proximity Mafia Romance (Mafia Legacy - Perfectly Imperfect Book 1) by Neva Altaj
Beauty is a smarty-pants, under-appreciated hacker who is kidnapped after she messes with the wrong scarred alpha Beast in this fast-paced tale.

πŸ’• Broken Whispers (Perfectly Imperfect #2) by Neva Altaj
In this arranged marriage, sparks fly quickly between ballerina Beauty and her fierce, but tender-hearted Beast in this short retelling.

πŸ’•  The Beauty in Scars (Fractured Ever Afters #3) by M. L. Philpitt
This retelling gives a nod to elements of Disney's Beauty and the Beast, and Beauty is the one who bears the scars.

All three are high on spice!

Cheers fellow fairytale junkies!
