3 Beauty and the Beast Books with Fantasy Twists

Most Beauty and the Beast retellings are based in fantasy and magical in some way.  That's the nature of most fairytales.  In this update, I have three retellings for you with fun magical twists!  Plus, all three are currently available via Kindle Unlimited, which is an awesome way to access an seemingly endless supply of fairytale retellings.

Beauty and the Beast retelling Roses in Amber
Roses in Amber is one of the first retellings I've read that makes great use of the original, original Beauty and the Beast fairytale, along with fun nods to Disney's version. 

Beauty and her family retire to the countryside due to financial turmoil, just as in the original tales. She and her father venture back to the big city when they learn their fortunes may have turned and on the way back... that darned rose. But this time, Beauty picks the rose and the tale unfolds. 

Beauty leads the story in this retelling with agency and growing power. She's a delightful character to root for, and where she and her Beast find their happily ever after is an interesting new addition to Beauty and the Beast lore.

I love the build of fairy drama, family love triangles and warrior queens in this tale, and I think you will too. Highly recommended.

Beauty and the Beast retelling Of Curses & Beauty
Of Curses & Beauty by Elle Backenstoe is a cozy fantasy Beauty and the Beast tale with a positive message. Beauty isn't only making a daring escape from an arranged marriage to a dastardly kind of guy, she's fighting to be her own person. She flees through a bespelled forest and into the remote homestead of a surly, cursed prince.

The book shifts from a Beauty and the Beast tale mid-book to a focus on what happens when the magic fades and there's still a challenge to solve. Happily ever after guaranteed (plus low spice, if that's your preference).






Beauty and the Beast retelling Taken by the Beast
Taken by the Beast by Conner Kressley & Rebecca Hamilton is Beauty and the Beast with a twist… well, several twists... werewolves, the introduction of a magic system, and of course, a love triangle.

Beauty is a down on her luck model trying to find her place back home in small town USA. She takes a job restoring a night club only to find out there's more to her employer than meets the eye. She'll learn about herself and some nefarious goings on in hometown USA in this fast-paced tale. I appreciated the variation on a happily ever after ending and Beauty engaging her own agency to deal with curses and nefarious plans.

I made an interesting discovery the other day. I was making the acquaintance of Geralt of Rivia, the Witcher, in  The Last Wish   by Andrzej Sapkowski .  A delightful, tough, magical kinda dude.  I enjoyed the format of the book and getting to know the characters as the short stories unfolded into a broader tale. About three shorts in I was delightfully surprised to discover that Mr. Sapkowski enjoys fairy tales, and wove my fave into the story.   The Witcher Meets Beauty and the Beast in "Grain of Truth" In one of Geralts' adventures, "Grain of Truth," he is meandering through a forest and encounters the remains of two unfortunate souls.  One is a woman with a rose pinned to her dress.  He meanders further down the path and encounters a dilapidated castle.  Upon entering the courtyard he is accosted by the Beast, also called Nivellen.  Nivellen is a jovial fellow, and after a ferocious display where he fails to frighten the Witche...

Symbolism of the Rose in Beauty and the Beast

Roses play a significant role in many Beauty and the Beast tales. Have you ever wondered about the symbolism of the rose in Beauty and the Beast ?  Me too. Roses bid welcome on an ornate trellis before a lovely wrought door in an image by Tama66 via Pixabay The rose played a key role in the original tale by Madame Barbot de Villeneuve and in Madame LePrince de Beaumont's shortened version .   While I'm not a literary expert, I can wield a keyboard like a fiend.  Some research and voila, a few interesting tidbits.  We'll explore the setting at the time of the original tale and the importance of the rose in 18th century France when Mesdames Barbot de Villeneuve and LePrince de Beaumont penned their tales.  We'll also look into the symbolism of the rose and what it's hinting at for the leading characters. Beauty and the Beast Inspired Tales - a 2024 Recap

I read a lot in 2024 - just five shy of 100 books according to my Goodreads profile .  I've realized I don't love reading goals - they muck with the quality of what I'm reading.  Sometimes a quick and easy book is just the thing; sometimes I'm eager for a 1,000 page tome.  I'm an achiever by nature and if a goal is set, I'll strive towards it.  But reading is a passion and I don't want to muck with that, so I'm skipping a reading goal in 2025. All in all, it was a great reading year with some really excellent books.  I discovered Kate Quinn with  The Rose Code .  I enjoyed Violet and Xaden's dramatic fling in Fourth Wing and Iron Flame , and I re-read the first five of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series .  Gabriel de León in Empire of the Damned is one of my favorite not-so-heroes.  And both the Ilona Andrews Clean Sweep series and Spellslinger series by Sebastien de Castell were super fun.  What about Bride by Ali Hazelwood and ...
